Melbourne

Depois do repouso merecido, afinal ja eram 4 meses na estrada, la voltei a vida de nomada com a primeira paragem em Melbourne. Ao contrario de Sydney que e muito mais apressada e cintililante Melbourne e muito mais relaxada e underground. Muito mais artistica e gourmet com espetaculos de arte a cada esquina e cafes e restaurantes com esplanadas a acompanhar.
Ainda tivemos tempo de sentir a vibracao nocturna de Melbourne e encontrarmo-nos com Tim, um australiano da cidade que tinha feito a viajem por Africa comigo. Acabamos a noite com uma bebida no novo e cintilante casino...

After a good and well deserved rest in Sydney, was back to the nomad life. Melbourne came first and contrasting with the rush and glamour of Sydney we found a laid back and very arty city, with loads of cafes and restaurants and art shows everywhere.
Still there was time to check out the night life and meet Tim, an Melbournian that was in the same trip through Africa with me. We end up the night drinking in the flashy casino...

Bondi Beach

Ai esta... nao e a mais bonita, nem a melhor para o surf, mas e a mais "in" da australia.

Not the nicest beach nor the best to surf, but the most glitzy of Australian beaches.

Sculptures by the sea

Durante tres semanas uma enorme exposicao de esculturas ao ar livre teve lugar ao longo do caminho que liga as praias de Bondi e Coogee. Com centenas de obras de arte, o ja popular passeio por entre a acidentada linha da costa de Sydney tornou-se povoado com multidoes.

During three weeks there was an exhibition of sculptures along the the walk between Bondi and Coogee beaches, with hundreds of art works,the already popular walk along the cliffs became crowded.

Mais 8 horas de aviao e aterramos na terra do feiticeiro de Oz.
15 graus a chegada nao era o que estava a espera, especialmente para o fim da primavera. Mas afinal as alteracoes climaticas tambem chegaram a australia e os tres meses que por aqui passamos nao trouxeram as ondas de calor de que estava a espera.
2 dias em Bondi, com precos a condizer com a fama e la encontramos um pequeno apartamento em Randwick, perto de Bondi e Coogee, 2 das praias mais famosas em Sydney. Um mes sem mexer malas. Relaxe ao bom estilo australiano.

Another 8 hours in a plain and we where in the land of Oz. 15 degrees celsius was not in the expectations, especially with spring coming to an end. During the 3 months the scorching australian days barely made an apperance. Climate changes after all are global.
After 2 days in Bondi with matching prices with the fame, we found a small flat in Randwick, between Coogee and Bondi. A full month without packing bags. Just relax and a few in between.

Hi everyone! This is the other side of the world. How is the work back there? :))))))

As atracoes do costume foram preenchendo as horas de ocio que foram uma constante da estadia em Sydney. O porto com a Ponte e Casa da Opera. Um espetaculo de cabaret com uma cantora irlandesa na Casa da Opera. O zoo com todos os animais exoticos, incluindo o canguru e koala. Os jardins botanicos. A torre de Sydney. As diversas praias, etc, etc.

The usual attractions and touristy things were fillings the the spaces of boredom and relax. Sydney Harbour with the Bridge and Opera House. The Taronga Zoo with all the animals including the Koala and Kangoroo. The Botanic Gardens. The Tower of Sydney. The different beaches, etc, etc.

Nao podia no entanto deixar Sydney sem experimentar o surf...Praia de Maroubra, reserva de surf nacional, 8:00 da manha. Com resmas de surfistas de todas as idades estao a acabar o dia na praia e a prepararem-se para mais um dia de trabalho, a coisa(surf) nem correu mal. Nas 2 horas da aula consegui apanhar um punhado de ondas e por varias vezes por-me de pe na prancha. Nada mal, nao? Voltei a fazer mais 3 aulas na Sunshine Coast mas a evolucao de principiante para expert nao aconteceu...valeu a pena e quem sabe se com mais umas tentavivas e mudo de profissao.

I couldn't leave Sydney without trying to surf... Maroubra beach, national surf reserve, 8am. With the beach full of all ages surfers leaving their waves to go to work, the class went very well. After two hours of being bashed around by waves the result was positive and I had managed to catch a few waves and stand on the board almost every one of them. I tried again a few more classes in the Sunshine Coast but the evolution from begginer to professional didn't happen... maybe after a few more times and i will be ready to career change.

A bonaca depois da tempestade.

Depois de um dia de chuvas torrenciais ao bom estilo tropical esta foi a insolita visao da principal estrada entre Siem Reap e Poipet, a fronteira com a Tailandia. Adultos aproveitam a oportunidade para tomarem banho nos lagos na berma da estrada enquanto as criancas se deliciam com as piscinas naturais creadas pela chuva.

After a day of tropical storms, this was the sight that faced us along the road from Siem Reap to Poipet, the border with Thailand. Adults took the chance to have a bath in the pounds by the road while children enjoyed and played delightfully in the natural swimming pools created by the rains.

A viajem para turistas como nos, a caminho de Bangkok para finalizar a aventura asiatica com um voo ate Sydney, tornou-se um entretenimento inesperado. Uma jornada de 300 Km que em condicoes normais e feita numa estrada de terra que vai passando de viajante para viajante como um pesadelo a evitar. Com o intuito de evitar o pesadelo e poupar uns trocados, a opcao de taxi por 30 dolares ate a fronteira seguido de 3 horas de autocarro nas modernas autoestradas tailandesas em vez dos 150 dolares de aviao directo a Bangkok parecia ser aceitavel. Assim fizemos e nos arrependemos.

300 Km that of dirty road to the border in normal conditions, was suddenly entertaining. The journey, the last of our Asian adventure before fliying to Sydney, goes around the traveller community as a nightmare that is best avoided with 150 US dolars and a direct flight to Bangkok. To us, the 30 dolars by taxi to the border and 3 hours by bus in the modern Thai motorways thereafter, seemed an acceptable risk. The decision was soon to be regreted.

Chegados a fronteira e sempre assediados por locais que nos queriam levar ate ao autocarro do lado tailandes, la encontramos a companhia e o autocarro. Partida as 2 da tarde, mas o autocarro so apareceu as 5 depois da fronteira fechar e nao haver mais turistas para transportar. Varias tentativas de utilizar outras companhias com destino a Bangkok foram sendo recusadas com a desculpa que o destino era outro, ou nao entendiam ingles, apesar de Bangkok estar marcado claramente nos autocarros. E sempre encaminhando-nos para a companhia que tentavamos evitar.

Sem opcoes la seguimos viajem. 14 horas depois de deixarmos Siem Reap la chegamos ao destino. Sem problemas de maior, ate a chegada ao hotel em Bangkok.

Malas abertas e a realizacao que tinham sido remexidas durante a viajem. Roubado o carregador do ipod. Nao tinha nada mais de valor. A Jennifer varios colares, brincos e presentes de Natal para mandar por correio desapareceram.

Arrived to the border and followed closely by touts, we found our way to the Thai side and to the bus station and our bus to Bangkok. Schedule to depart at 2pm, was 5pm when the bus came along. The border had closed and no more tourists would come... Attemping to get another buses, clearly marked Bangkok, was denied with the excuse that the destination was other than Bangkok or english was not understood. And allways directing us to the bus company we were trying to avoid. With no other option, we took the bus and 14 hours after leaving Siem Reap we were in Bangkok.

Bags open in the hotel room and the surprise: someone went trough them stealling stuff. To me, only an ipod charger. Nothing else of value i had in the bag. To Jennifer, jewllery and some Christmas presents were gone.

Como bons cidadaos e com o intuito de evitar que futuros turistas caissem na mesma armadilha, pela manha la nos dirijimos a esquadra mais proxima para reportar o crime. 200 bath (5 euros) directamente para o bolso do policia um papel com carimbo para o seguro e ja esta. O nome da companhia de autocaros ou outros detalhes nao nos perguntaram...se calhar tambem a comissao para a policia...

Se alguem esta a pensar fazer o mesmo trajecto aviao e a unica opcao aceitavel.

As good citizens, next morning we went to the police station to report the crime and try to avoid that other tourists would be caught in the scam. 200 bath (5 euro) straight to the police pocket, a paper with the stamp for the insurance and taht was it. No questions about the name of the company or any other detail. Maybe the police has some comission in the profits of the robberies...

Anyone thinking to do the same journey, a flight is the only good option.

Para visitar todo o complexo alugamos um tuk tuk que durante 2 dias nos levou aos templos mais importantes. A quantidade de templos e enorme e encontram-se dispersos por toda a regiao a volta de Siem Reap. Mas com 2 dias consegue-se visitar os mais importantes.

In order to visit the temples we rented a tuk tuk that took us around the most important places for 2 days. The amount of temples is huge but in 2 days the most important ones can be visited calmly.

Porto em Siem Reap

Chegada a Siem Reap. A confusao e evidente. A cidade vive dos turistas e dos dolares que os acompanham.

Cidade Fluctuante

Ao longo das 5 horas de viagem o cenario e fantastico e somos confrontados com autenticas cidades flutuantes, onde o unico chao firme e o das casas, templos, supermercados, bares e repaticoes governamentais que ali se encontram e as estradas e caminhos sao as aguas do rio.

All along the 5 hours cruising the tonle sap the scenery is amazing and every so often a floating city come before our eyes. The only firm ground is the one from the houses, temples, shops, pubs and government offices that were built over the water.

Depois de uns dias na capital e de toda a ambiencia colonial da marginal do Mekong River, outros destinos a norte esperavam por nos. Uma viajem de 7 horas( 300Km) num daqueles famosos autocarros que entraram para o Guiness como os mais idosos no planeta, e eis-nos chegado a Battabang. Ponto de partida para uma subida do rio Tonle Sap ate Siem Reap, onde os famosos Templos Angkor se encontram. 30 minutos mais numa carrinha de caixa aberta com mais 7 pessoas e malas a mistura por uma estrada de terra... um barco atracado na margem do rio, eis o porto de Battabang. 5 horas de viajem que valem todo o disconforto a que fomos sujeitos durante os 2 dias anteriores. After a few more days spent in the capital, a journey to the north was expecting us. 7 hours (300Km) in bus that was part of The Guiness Book of world records as one of the oldest on the planet. Arrived to Battabang and 2 days later and 30 min. in the back of a pick up van with 7 more persons and bags, through a dirty road and we arrived to Battabang port, just a boat that was also in the Guiness book for the same reasons as the bus. 5 hours winding up the river that are well worth it all the painfull moments spent to get here. Phnom Penh

Na lista dos 10 paises mais pobres do mundo o Cambodja. Caixas multibanco so em US dolares. A capital e marcada por uma arquitectura colonial com pequenas partes da cidade bastante bem conservadas e com lojas de design, moda, restaurantes, cafes que nos levariam a acreditar que estariamos em uma dada capital Europeia, nao fosse o contraste com a vizinhanca de predios decrepitos, ruas caoticas cheias lixo, mercados. Criancas e adultos amputados por causa de minas, heranca dos tempos idos dos Khmer Vermelhos, sao uma vidsao constante a cada virar de esquina.

One of the 10 poorest countries in the world. ATM machines only give away US dolars.

The capital is mostly marked by the french colonial presence with small parts of the city very well developed with fashion shops, design, restaurants and cafes that almost made us think that we were in some european city. But side by side with this happy picture is the reality of most Cambodian persons, with building falling apart, cahotic streets full of rubish and markets. Adults and children amputees are a very common sight due to land mines from past times that are still hiding on the ground.

E depois de 5 dias no Santuario, foi tempo de partir a descoberta de outro sitio para relaxar. Acabou por ser nas praias gemeas de Thong Nai Pan Noi e Thong Nai Pan Yai que encontramos o balanco ideal entre Natureza e civilizacao. Paraiso.

After 5 days in the Sanctuary, was time to move along and find other spot to kick back. We found the twin beaches of Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai where the balance between civilization and Nature was perfect. Paradise.

1 semana depois, de volta a estrada. Bangkok. Voo para Phnom Penh capital do Cambodja.
Terminal de chegadas, 20 dolares, 30 minutos de espera, e autorizacao para entrar no pais.
Nao sem antes realizar que algures na Tailandia alguem se apoderou de 100 US dolares que pertenciam...tarde demais...em algum hotel provavelmente.

1 week later and Bangkok as the departure point for Phnom Penh, Cambodia Capital.
Arrivals terminal, 20 US dolar, 30 minutes waiting and we were allowed to enter the country.
Not without figuring out that somewhere along the way in Thailand someone took hold of 100 USD that belonged to me... too late for complaints...gone in some hotel room.
